Inside PanelPicker: A Look at What Tracks are Trending for SXSW EDU 2018

PanelPicker is the two-step online process that allows the community to have a significant voice in programming SXSW EDU 2018. Step one encourages the community to enter proposals for daytime conference programming and step two allows the community to then browse all of the ideas, leave comments and vote for their favorites.

This year we received a record number 1,442 proposals for SXSW EDU 2018. Voting is currently open on all of these ideas through Friday, August 25.

Each PanelPicker proposal is thematically aligned to one of seventeen various tracks. Tracks are designed to provide a structure for PanelPicker voters and conference attendees to help navigate through the content. Below is a breakdown of this year's submitted PanelPicker proposals by track:

  • Instruction - 225
  • Implementation - 175
  • Leadership - 162
  • Equity - 150
  • Employability - 86
  • Business - 83
  • Learning Spaces - 81
  • Informal Education - 80
  • Data - 73
  • SEL - 52
  • Arts - 52
  • Continuing Education - 48
  • Early Learning - 46
  • VR/AR - 44
  • Cognitive Process - 37
  • Special Needs - 26
  • Language Learning - 22

A quick look at this distribution helps illuminate some of the ideas and topics trending. The Equity track has experienced the biggest increase in submissions over last year's proposals with 52% growth. Informal Education on the other hand is a new track option for 2018 and has proven to be of interest with one of the strongest launches ever for a new track, with 80 submissions. Tracks that grew by more than 40% over last year include Business, Language Learning, SEL, Equity, VR/AR and Employability.

SXSW EDU PanelPicker community voting is open through Friday, August 25. Login to panelpicker.sxsw.com or create an account to begin voting – select the “vote up” icon for “yes” or the “vote down” icon for “no” next to each proposal.
